Like the Alltrack, the Golf SportWagen is on the chopping block; the 2019 model will be the last sold in this country as VW shifts its production focus to building a new compact SUV. The silver lining is that the factory is allotting extra production, with the goal of having the wagon available at dealerships through most of the 2020 calendar year. SportWagen models are the choice for customers who want not only space and utility, but also an entertaining drive. SportWagen is available in three trims — Comfortline, Highline and Execline — the first two being front-wheel-drive models powered by the same 1.4-litre turbo four engine as in the new 2019 Jetta. Execline gets the 1.8T engine as well as 4Motion AWD. The 1.4T is paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.8T is available with a six-speed DSG automatic. The SportWagen has a spacious cargo hold that’s in line with those of compact SUVs. With the rear seats up, the SportWagen boasts 861 litres (30.4 cu-ft) of space. When the 60/40-split rear seat is fully folded, that figure rises to a very usable 1,883 litres (66.5 cu-ft) of storage.
